ISW Scholarship Charter

(Rules and regulations)

Overall:
The scholarship subcommittee wishes to present recognition awards to the children of India Society of Worcester members. These awards are presented each year. The following describes the rules set up by the ISW scholarship subcommittee.

Objectives:
The awards are instituted by India Society of Worcester to
  • Encourage Scholastic and extra curricular Achievement
  • Encourage youths and children of ISW members to excel in their field
  • Encourage youths towards ISW community oriented activities
  • Highlight the importance of our youths in Community Services


Source of funds:

Scholarship awards are sponsored by individuals and families. Everyone is couraged to apply.

Calendar of events:

    September 10: An email invitation will be sent to ISW community to encourage students to apply for scholarship awards.

    October 12th: Last date to file applications.

    ISW Diwali Function: Awards will be distributed during the Award ceremony.

Types of Awards:

1. Citizenship awards: These awards will be given to individuals who have shown their commitment to community service or any other public service. Following are some of the examples of this type of service

  • Volunteer of ISW/IYG programs
  • Volunteer in ISW schools
  • Raising funds for any charity
  • Provide services in project like Katrina, Earthquakes, etc.
  • Members of Executive Committees in schools or societies like IYG
  • Political Achievements

2. Academic Excellence Award: These awards will be based on academic excellence. Please note from the Selection Criteria that community services and extra-curricular services are considered as part of academics too.

Calendar of events:

  • August 2012 A notification through eSandesh to the ISW community regarding the program , encouraging students to apply for scholarship awards.
  • September 2012 Reaching out to our patrons for their contributing to this program.
  • Working closely with the ISW youth program to increase the awareness and encouraging their eligible members to apply and participate.
  • Posting the information on Metro high schools bulletin boards
  • Continue eSandesh communication
  • Oct.15,2012: Last day of receiving applications
  • Nov.13,2012: Final awards distribution.

About the Awards:

Citizenship awards:

These awards will be given to individuals who have shown their commitment to community service or any other public service. Following are some of the examples of this type of service.
  • Volunteer of ISW/IYG programs
  • Volunteer in ISW schools
  • Raising funds for any charity
  • Provide services in community projects, disaster relief efforts etc
  • Members of Executive Committees in schools or societies like IYG.
  • Political Achievements
  • Any additional achievements showing your dedication to community service.

Academic Excellence Award:

These awards will be based on academic excellence. Please note from the Selection Criteria that community services and extra-curricular services are also considered as part of academics .

Types and Number of Awards:

 

  • Four Academic Excellence award of $500 each (junior and seniors only)
  • One Citizenship award of $500 each (Any high school student)

Award Eligibility rules:

 

  1. Applicant’s family must be a member of ISW at the time of application.
  2. For Academic awards any student in 11th or 12th grade at the time of application is eligible.
  3. For Citizenship awards, any student who was in high school at the time of application with GPA 2.0 or above in the latest grade is eligible.
  4. One candidate can win only one award in one year. (Citizenship or Academic)
  5. One candidate can win only one academic award and only one citizenship award during their school duration. Once you have won one type of award, please do not apply again for the similar one.
  6. Applicant should not be a member of the family of Scholarship Subcommittee Judges
  7. Applicant may apply for both types of awards using separate applications.

Application requirements for Citizenship Awards:

 

  1. Transcripts of last grade passed
  2. Certificates of Community services
  3. Reference letters from charitable organizations, schools, community centers, churches, etc.
  4. Active participation in ISW and/or IYG activities.

Application requirements for Academic Excellence Award

Core Requirements (whatever applicable):
  1. SAT score
  2. No. of years the student has been an honors student, on principal’s list etc.
  3. Receiver of other Honors Society Awards if applicable
  4. Any other scholastic, sports or extra curricular achievement. E.g. music, dancing, boy scout, girls scout, social service, elderly service.
  5. Participation in ISW or IYG activities

Selection Criteria:

Citizenship awards

All application will be evaluated at once and top candidates will be chosen based on the no. of awards available. Preference may be given for services towards ISW related services.
Academic Excellence Awards

  1. Core requirements will carry a weight of 60%
  2. Supplemental will carry a weight of 40%.
  3. All application will be evaluated at once and top candidates will be chosen. (The competition will be overall and not within grades. Please note that this is only for juniors and seniors)
  4. ISW/IYG related community services may be an additional qualification.
