Day trip to Peabody Essex Museum Apr 09

On Sunday, April 5th, 2008 we went to the Peabody Museum. It was one of the most joyous and memorable trip. On the way to the museum we played antakshari of hindi songs and other language songs.  It was hilarious.

The Museum was celebrating “Sensational India” event. There were lots of Indian art, hands on exhibits like Wali, an Indian art, Rangoli, Indian Magic show and different form of Dances such as Bhangra, Kathak and Bharatnatyam.

I was chosen to volunteer for the magic show and was able to convert king of hearts into 20 rupees with magic word “choo mantar, choo mantar, choo mantar, choo”.  We learnt how to sketch Wali which is widely practiced in western  part of rural Maharashtra. We also Participated in the Boston Bhangra Demo and learnt few bhangra steps. The volunteers’ for bhangra dance were Syon and Amulia.

The Art exhibits were really beautiful.  We had treasure hunt planned for ISW kids in the Art exhibit area, which made the art exhibit much more interactive and interesting. The bridal dress made out of shells was awesome.  On a platform there was an assortment of exquisite Indian pots.

Journey to Salem felt like we were transported to India, and we felt surrounded by various things and culture of India. There was so much more to do, and we had felt the time was too short to see and do everything. I wish, we have this more often, with more of us also actively participating.
