Health Care Proxy Workshop

In continuation with its theme of collaborating with peer organizations to bring cultural, community service and educational events, ISW hosted the Indian Circle for Caring (ICC) at its ISW Center in Shrewsbury, MA.  ICC has been a pioneer in providing support to families in need and their services include one-on-one caring services rather than a referral service.  Over 200 volunteers are involved in ICC activities.  ICC has undertaken a massive effort to provide education and support to a very important but often neglected topic of "Healthcare Proxy and Living Will". Mr. Girish Mehta and Mr. Yogesh Parikh, from ICC, conducted this highly informative workshop for a very engaged audience.  We had more than 50 participants who were eagerly taking notes, asking questions and engaging in stimulating discussions.  Those who attended received a copy of the "Five Wishes" document which acts as the Healthcare Proxy and Living Will and were encouraged to complete the document as soon as possible.

Throughout the workshop it was evident that while this topic is not considered "Urgent" it falls into the "Important" category and the right time to implement is NOW - when you are healthy, can think, and speak for yourself! While we spend a lot of time and money on planning for the future, we overlook
the planning for our own wishes pertaining to our health and related decisions during times when we are unable to decide.  Healthcare laws are complex on their own and the Healthcare Proxy and Living Will acts on your behalf - it is your voice when maybe you cannot speak!
