Republic Day - 2019

Republic Day 2019 --------------------- Sharad Mehta

This year the 70th Republic Day was celebrated in India with the usual splendor and glory. There were a few highlights that made this year’s parade special.

This year is the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. To honor this occasion, the Chief Guest for the Republic Day parade was the President of South Africa, Mr Cyril Ramaphosa . This is befitting, because it was in Transvaal, South Africa that Gandhiji created the Tolstoy Farm and developed his concept of “Satyagraha” (Non-violent Resistance).

Here, both children and adults were taught about the “dignity of labor” including household chores, cleaning of toilets, tending to animals and farm-work. The Non-Violence resistance was eventually used effectively to persuade the British to peacefully give India her independence after more than 150 years of colonial rule.

Although the Republic Day parade is primarily to showcase India’s military strength, it also includes a contingent of tableaus (called “jhankis”) which showcase the incredible social and cultural diversity of India. This is to reinforce the ‘Unity in Diversity” theme of India which was very carefully nurtured by the Indian national leaders during the dawn of the nation’s independence.

This year is also the 100th anniversary of the Jallianwalla Bagh massacre.

In a local “mela” (a town-fair) over 1000 unarmed men, women and children were killed upon orders by General Dyer.

The Punjab tableau was in remembrance of this horrible historical event.
