The Tale of Two Postmasters

Stories have a curious way of repeating themselves across generations, though time often twists their endings.
A hundred years ago, the Gujarati master storyteller Dhoomketu wrote his literary masterpiece, The Letter. It was a heartbreaking tragedy about Coachman Ali, a retired hunter whose only daughter, Mariam, married and moved away. Desperate for news of her well-being, the aging Ali walked through the bitter cold and scorching sun every single day to the local post office, enduring the cruel mockery of the staff and the postmaster. Weak and dying, Ali finally handed his last gold coin to the postmaster, pleading: "When Mariam’s letter comes, place it on my grave. Allah will read it for me." It was only after Ali passed away—and after the postmaster’s own daughter fell ill in a distant town—that the postmaster understood the excruciating agony of waiting. When Mariam’s postcard finally arrived, the remorseful postmaster could do nothing but place it on Ali’s grave, his tears soaking the yellowed paper. That tale won literary acclaim in 1923 for its haunting beauty.
Now, in the year 2026, a modern counterpart to Ali’s story unfolded. There were no literary prizes this time—just a score of family members and a local post office who knew the truth of what happened. But this modern tale swapped tragedy for a touch of wry heroism.
Our recent story centers around Vidush, a retired engineer living in Mumbai, and his distant cousin Maniar, a single retiree who stepped into the role of our protagonist. Vidush and his wife, Vibha, had seen all three of their adult children settle in the United States. Thanks to modern technology, communication was no longer a matter of months; supersonic video calls kept them connected daily. After Vibha survived a health scare, their children insisted on bringing both parents to America. Within a year, green cards were approved, and the couple prepared to move.
Wanting to keep their Mumbai apartment safe, Vidush entrusted the flat to Cousin Maniar as a caretaker. Legal documents were drafted in India and mailed across the globe to the US for Vidush’s notarized signature. His daughter, Mala, sent them back to India via international post, fully confident they would arrive safely in ten days.
The package made it to India on schedule—and then vanished without a trace.
Mala sent the tracking number to Maniar, who walked five minutes from the apartment complex to the local post office to inquire. Day after day, the clerks shook their heads: No legal papers. At first, the visits were friendly. But as days turned into weeks, warmth faded into annoyance, mirroring the faint echo of Coachman Ali’s visits a century prior.
"Look, Mr. Maniar," the postmaster finally said one morning, inviting him in for a cup of tea. "If the documents turn up, we will call you. Please don't walk down here every day—it breaks our hearts to see a senior gentleman like you coming back empty-handed."
Defeated, Maniar informed Vidush, who then emailed the housing society to explain the delay. Fresh documents were signed in the US, sent back to India with Mala during a family visit, and finally handed off. The problem was resolved.
And then came the climax.
After a staggering 158 days, the postman rang Maniar’s doorbell and handed him the original, long-lost envelope.
Was it a victory for the post office, a triumph of persistence, or simply Maniar’s sheer luck? After nearly six months in transit, the misplaced papers had finally completed their journey. It remains a baffling, amusing mystery—a gentle reminder that no matter how fast our world moves, life still finds ways to surprise us.
